Website headline examples for your homepage
A homepage headline is read in about a second, usually by someone who has just clicked a search result. It has one job before any other: confirm they are in the right place. Clever comes second, and usually costs more than it earns.
The eight below are eight different ways to do that confirming. The first is the safe default and will beat a clever headline on most small business sites. The rest are for when you know something specific about who is arriving.
Service plus place
[Your main service] in [your town]
The safe default. It says what and where, which is what they searched for.
The outcome
[The problem], sorted — usually the same day
When the result is more compelling than the service name.
Answers the worry
The price we quote is the price you pay
When the whole market has a trust problem.
Speaks to the customer
For [the specific person you serve]
Where naming who it is for filters better than naming what it is.
Credential-led
[Licensed / certified] [plural role] in [your town]
Where the licence is the first thing people look for.
The question they typed
Need [a/an] [role] in [your town]?
Mirror the search that brought them here.
Plain and unglamorous
[Plural role] who turn up and charge what they quoted
When your market distrusts polish.
With the next step in it
[Your call to action] — [the first concrete step]
Where the headline sits right on top of the button.

Common questions
What should a homepage headline say?
What you do and where you do it, unless you have a specific reason to do something else. It sounds unambitious, and it out-performs clever wording on almost every small business site, because the visitor arrived from a search and is checking they landed in the right place before they read anything else.
How long should a headline be?
Short enough to read in one glance — under about ten words. If it needs a second clause to make sense, move that clause into the line underneath, which is exactly what a subheading is for.
Should the headline include my town?
If you serve a specific area, yes. It filters out the people you cannot help, it matches how people search for local services, and it reassures the ones you can help. National businesses should replace it with whatever narrows their audience instead.
Do headlines need to be clever?
No, and clever is expensive when it costs clarity. A visitor who cannot tell what you sell leaves in about a second. Earn the clever line on a page people reach after they already know what you do.
