About us examples for tutors

An About page has to answer one question fast: why you rather than the other three quotes. These are ten different answers to it.

Ten of them follow, written for tutors rather than filled in from a template. Your customer is a parent watching their child lose confidence in a subject, and what they are weighing up before they get in touch is paying weekly for months with no idea whether anything is improving.

Plain and direct

[Business name] is a tutor in [your area]. I work with students on maths and science, exam preparation and essay and writing support. I am qualified and background-checked, and the first session tells you where the gaps really are. If you want a tutor who shows you evidence of progress without being asked, that is the whole pitch.

Use this if you want one paragraph that does the job and nothing more.

The origin story

[Business name] started because [founder name] kept meeting people who had been let down. What they described, over and over, was paying weekly for months with no idea whether anything is improving. So I built the opposite. I am qualified and background-checked. Qualified in the subject taught, background-checked, and teaching the specification your child is actually sitting. I start with an assessment session that tells you where the gaps really are. [Number] years on, most of my work still comes from people passing my name to someone else.

Use this if you started out because you were fed up with how the work was being done.

Names the worry first

Most people looking for a tutor are worried about the same thing: paying weekly for months with no idea whether anything is improving. So here is how this works. I start with an assessment session that tells you where the gaps really are. I teach to the specification they are actually sitting. I make the first session an assessment. I am qualified and background-checked. None of that should have to be taken on faith — ask, and I will show you.

Use this when people arrive already wary, usually because of a bad experience elsewhere.

Credentials first

[Business name] is qualified and background-checked. Qualified in the subject taught, background-checked, and teaching the specification your child is actually sitting. I work with students on maths and science, exam preparation and essay and writing support, mostly for a parent watching their child lose confidence in a subject. I report progress rather than assume it. Qualifications are the floor rather than the pitch — but you should know they are there before anything else on this page matters.

Use this where the licence or registration is the thing people check before anything else.

Local and rooted

I am a tutor based in [your town], and [your town] is where I work. That matters more than it sounds. It means I know the streets, the buildings and the people you are talking about, it means you deal with the same person each time, and it means I am still here later. I work with students on maths and science, exam preparation and essay and writing support. I am qualified and background-checked, and my reputation here is the only marketing I have ever needed.

Use this if you serve one area properly and that is your advantage over the national outfits.

Walks through the process

Here is what working with me looks like. You get in touch, and I start with an assessment session that tells you where the gaps really are. I agree what is happening and what it costs, in writing, before anything begins. Then I do the work. I am qualified and background-checked. I make the first session an assessment.

Use this if people hesitate because they do not know what happens after they get in touch.

The thing we do differently

Plenty of people will do maths and science and exam preparation. What I am known for is showing the parent evidence of progress they did not have to ask for. It sounds like a small thing. It is the difference between a session that does what you hoped and one that does not. I am qualified and background-checked. I report progress rather than assume it.

Use this when you can name one specific standard you hold that your competitors do not.

Short

A tutor in [your town], qualified and background-checked. I work with students on maths and science, exam preparation and essay and writing support. I report progress rather than assume it. Book an assessment, or call first and ask anything you like.

Under sixty words — Use this when the About section is a sidebar, a footer, or a directory profile.

Small and deliberately so

It is me, not a team and not a call centre. You deal with the same person every time, which is why by the second session I already know what we are working with. I am qualified and background-checked, I work with students on maths and science, exam preparation and essay and writing support, and I take on a limited number of clients so the standard does not slip.

Use this if being small and consistent is the point, rather than something to apologise for.

The promise

My promise is simple: I report progress rather than assume it, and if I get something wrong I put it right at my cost. I am qualified and background-checked. Qualified in the subject taught, background-checked, and teaching the specification your child is actually sitting. I work with students on maths and science, exam preparation and essay and writing support for a parent watching their child lose confidence in a subject. I start with an assessment session that tells you where the gaps really are.

Use this if you are willing to put something in writing, and you actually honour it.

Writing for tutors: what actually matters

What should a tutor’s website say that a generic one does not?

Three things, in this order. That you are qualified and background-checked. That you understand the thing people are actually worried about, which for tutors is paying weekly for months with no idea whether anything is improving. And what happens next: an assessment session that tells you where the gaps really are. Everything else on the page is decoration by comparison.

What does a parent watching their child lose confidence in a subject check first?

The credential, then the proof. For tutors it sounds like this. I report progress rather than assume it. I teach to the specification they are actually sitting. I make the first session an assessment. Put at least one of those above the fold rather than on a separate page nobody opens.

What is the most common mistake on a tutor’s website?

Writing about the business instead of the customer. "We have been established since 1998" answers a question nobody asked. "I start with an assessment session that tells you where the gaps really are" answers the one they are actually holding. If you only fix one thing, fix that.

How long should the copy be?

Shorter than you think, except where trust is being built. An About page of 120 well-chosen words beats 500 vague ones. The exception is anything explaining paying weekly for months with no idea whether anything is improving — there, specifics earn their length.
